The Request:
This patron brought me into the world of musical manuscripts with this antiqued boarder cover for his collection of church choir psalms titled – Octavo Editions. I would eventually adorn the collection of works that would be printed inside the boarders of the piece itself.
The Direction:
The patron had given me his idea, business name and a few tid-bits about himself to incorporate into the piece. For example, the oak trees that framed the window to his office where he re-etched his compositions for the collection.
The Design:
After several boarder pattern studies, we landed on the oak leaf. I really wanted to do two boarder patterns with one insetting the other, so I chose acorns as the inner pattern taken from and old tin etching while designing the outer oak leaf branches on the outside. Crowning the piece is an illustration of a pipe organ the Octavo Edition was intended for.
